St Joseph’s lies in a part of Birmingham that experiences serious deprivation. The Church community has played its part over the years in efforts of local people and organisations to better the lives of residents.
Birinus worked with the parish leadership team to prepare an application to the Big Lotter to offer a 4 year Reaching Communities project where with with the elderly, the young people, parents and those needing support with their finances, were taken to a new level with a full-time Project Co-ordinator and a part-time Centre Manager. The Centre was refurbished, courses in parenting, (together with skills in English), and youth leadership began, and new parnerships in the community, especially with new immigrants from the Horn of Africa were fostered.
Though the Reaching Communities grant has ended, the great spirit of the parish connecting to the needs of the area continues, and there has been a spin off developing the Leadership of young people with a new 4 year project, funded by Children in Need. A part-time Co-ordinator is building on the foundation of the partnership with ACE Music and Dance and PPDG (Pertemps People Development Group) to offer ongoing opportunities for young people to develop their talents and make a real contribution to society.
